Typically, in the UK there are 4 common plumbing systems with different associated water pressures.
As guidance, below are some details to help you try to establish what type of system you have, however, we would always recommend that you consult a professional if you are in anyway unsure before purchasing a tap from us.
WATER PRESSURES - WHAT IS WATER PRESSURE?
Water pressure is a term that is used to describe the strength of the water flow through a pipe. Water pressures are measured in something called bar. OfWat regulate the water sector in England and Wales – this is how they describe water pressure.
WATER PRESSURES - WHY IS KNOWING YOUR WATER PRESSURE SO IMPORTANT?
Within the UK market there are many different tap choices that are manufactured to different qualities and specifications. At IINTRA, all of our taps are rigorously tested to ensure that they operate well for the majority of applications from 0.5bar of pressure to 5.0bar of pressure with the optimum being 3.0bar of pressure. HOT GRAVITY & COLD GRAVITY/MAIN
These are typically a low pressure system (LP min 0.2bar) where you will have a cold water tank in your loft, a hot water cylinder and you do not have a shower pump installed.
Please note: Gravity fed systems such as these typically provide MP (0.5bar) to fittings on the ground floor of a 2 story property where the cold water tank is in the loft.
COMBINATION BOILER
These are classed as medium pressure systems (MP 0.5 – 1.0bar) where you may have a combination boiler that heats water on demand and do not have storage tanks or shower pumps installed.
MAINS HIGH PRESSURE
These are classed as high pressure systems (HP1/2/3 2.0 – 3.0bar) where you will have an unvented cylinder with an expansion cylinder but do not have a cold water tank.
PUMP ASSISTED
These are classed as high pressure systems (MP to HP4 3.0bar+) where you will have a suitable pump installed.
Please note: It is imperative, if you have such a system, that you know what bar pressure your system is running. Extremely high pressure systems, running over 5.0bar may require specialist taps.
